As a piano company, Kawai have the second largest share of Piano sales across the world. Koichi Kawai, who founded the company, was born in Hamamatsu in 1887 as a neighbor to Torakusu Yamaha. When he was old enough he was taken on by Mr Yamaha as his apprentice and after Yamaha’s death founded the Kawai Piano Corporation in 1927. He later received the prestigious “Blue Ribbon Medal” from the Emperor of Japan, becoming the first person in the musical instrument industry to receive such an honor.
